Tim Cook appeared genuinely excited when Apple unveiled the Vision Pro in June 2023. It’s not always simple to read about him. However, as he stood at the WWDC stage in Cupertino and observed a product he referred to as “the most advanced consumer electronics device ever created,” his stance gave the impression that this was a legacy bet rather than merely a product launch. He spoke of a “infinite canvas” where life on the digital and real worlds would coexist. He referred to it as spatial computing. The room reacted with the kind of respect that is typically reserved for something that truly transforms the world.
Apple discreetly reduced production less than two years later. According to reports, the marketing budget decreased by over 95%. IDC estimates that 45,000 units were shipped in the last quarter of the previous year. Those figures are particularly painful for a company that sells hundreds of millions of iPhones.
Although it would be easy to label this as a simple failure, that framing is missing something. The Vision Pro’s hardware is truly amazing; it’s packed with sensors, capable of things that still have a hint of science fiction, and constructed with the same meticulous attention to detail that Apple applies to everything it touches. It’s not that it doesn’t function. The issue is that very few people outside of a small group of tech enthusiasts have a compelling case for owning one. The difference between “remarkable object” and “essential purchase” becomes extremely difficult to close at $3,499.
The obvious headline is the price, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. According to Morgan Stanley analyst Erik Woodring, Vision Pro never sold widely because of three factors: cost, form factor, and a lack of native VisionOS apps. The last point merits more consideration than it typically receives. Apple promised 600 apps made especially for the headset at launch. In contrast, the iPhone App Store had tens of thousands in its first year of operation. Audiences are what developers follow, and there weren’t enough people attending Vision Pro to generate that kind of momentum. The ecosystem did not catch fire.

In contrast, Meta has been acting in a more subdued and possibly more astute manner. Approximately 80% of the mixed-reality market is currently controlled by its Quest headsets, which are priced at about $419, a small portion of Apple’s entry point.
Though it doesn’t have to be, the Quest isn’t as technically advanced as the Vision Pro. It’s light enough to wear for an hour, inexpensive enough to try, and supported by enough gaming content to make it worthwhile to spend time under a Christmas tree. In contrast, early adopters of Apple’s product frequently describe it as isolating, physically removing the wearer from the surrounding space. No amount of engineering can swiftly overcome that social and psychological barrier.
This has a noteworthy historical echo. When Google Glass first came out in 2013, there was a lot of interest in it. It became a cultural cautionary tale in less than two years. People were derisively referred to as “glassholes.” The product was never able to break free from the precarious space between utility and novelty. Although Apple’s brand carries a different weight and its product is far more capable, the underlying dynamic rhymes. The social permission structures required for wearable computing to thrive in the wild are constantly being surpassed.
To his credit, Cook has never claimed that Vision Pro was made for everyone at this time. He has consistently framed it as a foundation and a first-generation product. And that’s a little honest. Many revolutionary products appeared dubious when they were first introduced. There was no App Store on the original iPhone. Many people were critical of the original Apple Watch. However, both had an immediate and obvious use case that made the asking price reasonable for millions of people right away. Vision Pro is still looking for the precise moment when a regular person puts it on, notices the difference, and wants to purchase one right away.
According to reports, Apple has put the next full Vision Pro iteration on hold in favor of a lighter, less expensive version and wearables with AI capabilities more generally. Meta has also started shifting funds from its metaverse goals to AI glasses. The industry appears to be coming to the same, somewhat depressing conclusion: most people won’t likely wear a $3,500 gadget by themselves in their living rooms in the future of spatial computing.
This does not imply that the Vision Pro narrative is finished. It’s possible that the less expensive model Apple is purportedly working on will appeal to a market that the original was unable to. The app library might develop into something that warrants the form factor. However, as this develops, there’s a sense that the window of opportunity for VR headsets to define the next computing era is closing, and that the businesses placing the biggest bets on that vision are subtly reevaluating what they truly think will happen next.
