FIFA Referee Salary 2026: The Surprising Truth About What World Cup Officials Actually Take Home

In soccer, it’s a common misconception that the real money is in the locker rooms rather than with the officials on the touchlines. It’s a fair assumption. The headlines, transfer fees, and brand deals are all dominated by players. However, if you take a moment to consider what FIFA is paying its referees for the 2026 World Cup, that presumption begins to seem a little out of date.

Referees at this summer’s North American tournament could make up to $100,000 during the competition, according to data published by The Times. That is the base ceiling, long before the official who is fortunate enough to oversee the final receives the entire top-end package and before bonuses start to apply for knockout round matches. Group stage matches are expected to cost about $3,000 per match, while matches in the later knockout stages are expected to cost about $10,000. The total earnings could significantly exceed that $100,000 amount for a referee who perseveres and makes it to the championship game.

The timeline is what truly sets that figure apart. Five weeks. Five weeks in the US, Canada, and Mexico is about what the 2026 World Cup asked of its officials. In contrast, a Premier League referee makes between $227,000 and $240,000 over the course of a nine-month season. A World Cup official who is performing well in the competition is rapidly closing that gap on a weekly basis.

It’s important to consider the historical background of the current FIFA referee salary. Referees were paid about half of what is currently offered at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Even Qatar 2022 gave its primary referees a base fee of $70,000 plus an additional $3,000 for each game. There is a discernible increase to $100,000 for 2026. It’s likely a combination of all three factors: FIFA’s expanding commercial aspirations, a sincere attempt to pay top officials more fairly, or just the inflated economics of a 48-team tournament that produced record revenues.

52 referees from associations all over the world participated in the 2026 edition; UEFA accounted for the largest portion of the officiating pool, slightly less than 29%. Mexico was represented by César Arturo Ramos and Katia Itzel García, while the United States alone supplied two referees, Tori Penso and Ismail Elfath. That diversity—a competition involving three countries, officiated by officials from dozens more—seems appropriate.

To put domestic leagues in perspective: In addition to about $5,375 per game and a separate payment for image rights, La Liga referees in Spain make about $157,000 a year. MLS referees are paid on a sliding scale according to experience; those with more than 300 games officiated make about $176,000, while those with less experience make about $89,000. Since all of these are full-season contracts, officials who advance to the later stages may find the World Cup’s concentrated earning window especially alluring.

The situation is very different outside of the elite tournament circuit. In the US, hourly wages for referees working at lower levels, such as amateur leagues, local competitions, and regional tournaments, typically range from $20 to $21, depending on the level of play. It takes years of development, evaluation, and steady performance at the national and international levels to become a FIFA-certified referee in the first place. The earning potential at the top feels both aspirational and rationally earned because it’s a long road with no guarantees.

Ironically, the 2026 World Cup—a competition marred by disputes over ticket prices, advertisements during hydration breaks, and FIFA’s more general business practices—quietly brought about one of the most open changes in the way it pays its officials. The headlines weren’t created by the referees. Seldom do they. However, those who traveled to North America this summer had their reputations put to the test in the biggest spotlight of the sport, and for the better performers, their bank accounts reflected that.
