Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Teremana Tequila: The Hidden Numbers Behind the World’s Fastest-Growing Spirit

It didn’t feel like a press release moment when Teremana Tequila discreetly reached the one-million-case annual sales milestone last year. It seemed to be something that the industry had been watching develop gradually for three years—a steady, nearly unyielding ascent that eventually became unavoidable.

In retrospect, Dwayne Johnson made one of the most bizarre timing choices in the history of modern beverages when he introduced the brand in March 2020. The world was coming to an end. Bars were closing. Nevertheless, a new tequila brand managed to establish itself. Teremana surpassed 230,000 nine-liter cases in its first year of operation. For background, at the time of its sale to Diageo for almost $1 billion, George Clooney’s Casamigos had 170,000 cases. On its own, that comparison ought to have sparked more discussion than it did.

However, ten is the number that keeps coming up. Only ten of the hundreds of tequila producers that are currently available on American shelves sell more than a million cases a year. One of them now is Teremana. Given that the brand is only five years old and costs about $30 per bottle in a market full of celebrity names vying for premium price points twice as high, this quiet statistic has a lot of weight.

Johnson seems to have realized something that most famous entrepreneurs overlook: the product must genuinely function. Teremana gained a credibility anchor that no marketing budget can match by collaborating with the Lopez family, who are Jalisco-based second-generation distillers and third-generation agave growers.

The liquid is distilled in handcrafted copper pot stills after being aged in American oak barrels and roasted in conventional small brick ovens. These choices have nothing to do with branding. These are production decisions that affect the flavor and, it seems, the sales numbers as well.

Since its debut, the brand has won more than 17 international spirits awards, including a gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. That is not insignificant. Actual awards from actual judges carry a different kind of weight in a category where shelf placement and influencer posts frequently determine a bottle’s fate. Retail buyers might have noticed. It’s also possible that customers did, especially those who gave it a try and kept coming back.

Since taking over as CEO in late 2022, Richard Black has guided the company through a truly challenging stage: maintaining quality while rapidly expanding. In Jesús María, the distillery is currently growing, and a second facility is being constructed on the original site. More handmade copper pot stills, more tiny brick ovens, and the same Lopez family supervision. Clearly, the objective is to expand without sacrificing what initially made the product worthwhile. The real unanswered question is whether that can be accomplished at the rate Teremana is moving.

It’s common knowledge that tequila is popular in the United States. The category is expanding more quickly than any other spirit in the country, and some predictions indicate that it will surpass vodka by the end of this decade. Teremana didn’t simply ride the wave; it landed in the center of it. According to reports, the retail value in the United States alone was between $330 and $350 million in 2022. The brand is currently valued at almost $2 billion. These figures would cause any investor to pause and reevaluate their preconceived notions about celebrity spirits.

As this develops, the Teremana story has an almost educational quality. The celebrity tequila market quickly became crowded, and the majority of those brands will quietly disappear. For now, Teremana is acting in the opposite way. Even though the brand hardly ever mentions them, the numbers speak for themselves.
