There’s a certain kind of television actor who never becomes a household name in the way that a lead might, but whose face you’d recognize anywhere. That type of actor was Hal Williams. When he passed away on July 15, 2026, at the age of 91, at his Rancho Mirage, California, home, the tributes were kind but subtly appropriate, the kind given to someone who was highly respected in the industry even though his name wasn’t always well-known to the general public.

His estimated net worth at the time of his death was $1 million, though some sources put it closer to $2 million. Williams never disclosed those figures. According to most accounts, he was a private man who let the work do the talking. That statistic reveals something intriguing about the economics of being a character actor, who is talented, trustworthy, and even adored, but not as wealthy as leads and stars. This is especially true for someone who has worked consistently in Hollywood for more than 50 years.

Columbus, Ohio, is where Halroy Candis Williams was born. He was not one of those performers who became interested in acting at an early age. He was employed as a postal worker and later as a corrections officer before he ever set foot on a soundstage. In 1968, when he was already in his early thirties, he relocated to Los Angeles with the goal of pursuing a career in entertainment. By industry standards, that’s a late start, and it merits a pause. His ability and perseverance are demonstrated by the fact that he developed the career he did from that point on.

The first television jobs were brief cameos on programs like “That Girl” and “The Jimmy Stewart Show.” Despite the modest nature of those early 1970s roles, they made him a recurring cast member and director. Because of his reputation for dependability, he was eventually cast in the recurring role of Officer “Smitty” Smith on “Sanford and Son.”

He made 22 appearances. His running sequence with co-star Howard Platt, in which Platt would give an excessively bureaucratic explanation and Williams would translate it into something that the average person could understand, was the kind of humorous rhythm that sounds straightforward but needs precise timing to perform consistently.

By the middle of the 1980s, Williams had joined the NBC sitcom “227,” which would become his most prominent and long-lasting role. He portrayed a grounded rather than ostentatious character as Lester Jenkins, the dependable and loving husband of Marla Gibbs’ Mary Jenkins. There were 116 episodes over the course of five seasons. The family dynamic the three of them created became one of the more authentic household setups in Black television of that era, with Regina King playing their daughter Brenda. Lester Jenkins was one of the better Black sitcom fathers of the 1980s; he was funny without being a punchline, present, and decent.

Among the movies he worked on were “Private Benjamin,” “The Rookie,” and “Flight,” starring Denzel Washington. He was not a movie star because of any of them. The trajectory was never really like that. However, his presence in those projects was consistent with what he did throughout his career: he showed up, performed well, and added a bit of realism to whatever scene he was in.

During his last years, he starred in “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and played Autry in the CBS adaptation of “Matlock.” His final credited television role was that one. In other words, he continued to work well into his late eighties.

After more than fifty years in the business, a net worth of about $1 million serves as a reminder that television acting, even excellent, reliable, and well-known television acting, isn’t always a path to substantial wealth. What Williams amassed was more difficult to measure: a body of work, a reputation, and the kind of institutional respect that allowed people to keep calling him until almost the very end. There’s a feeling that might have been sufficient for Williams.
