For more than twenty years, Faizon Love was a well-known figure in American comedy. His portrayal as Wanda, the Gimbel’s manager in Elf, turned into a kind of holiday tradition—the kind of character that casual viewers quote without necessarily knowing the actor’s name. He starred with Chris Tucker and Ice Cube in Friday, one of the most popular comedies of the 1990s. For a while, the career was actually working, the job was real, and the visibility was real.
The financial scenario in 2026 appears to be very different from what the filmography could imply. Love and his legal team revealed in court proceedings related to a Florida child support case that his highest gross annual income over the preceding five years was $13,000, that he had no income at all in 2025, and that he was mostly dependent on residual checks from Elf, which came to about $10,000 annually. Additionally, Love’s lawyer informed the court that Love had been living in his car and experiencing homelessness for a short while, but he later clarified that this was just temporary and that Love was now staying with a friend in California.
The reported $250,000 in unpaid child support—missed payments of $2,500 per month for years, according to his child’s mother—was the cause of his June 2026 arrest in Hillsborough County, Florida. Love was released on June 19 after being charged with two charges of contempt of court. He was given until July 1, 2026, by the judge to submit a financial statement proving his incapacity to pay, and his lawyer stated that he intended to request a revision of the current order based on his current income.
That legal issue coexists with an unsettled financial obligation. Love was sued for sexual harassment in 2022 by a former personal assistant. Love and his business did not address the complaint. The plaintiff was given $500,000 in damages along with about $43,000 in interest and expenses in the 2023 default judgment. In San Diego, a felony case is still pending. Love was accused of felony assault with a lethal weapon in February 2025 after reportedly hurling a credit card reader at a hotel front desk employee, hitting her in the head. A significant bodily injury enhancement was added by the prosecution. He might spend up to seven years behind bars if found guilty. In July 2025, a judge decided that there was enough evidence to move forward with the trial.
