The Larry Ellison Oracle Boom: How Cloud Computing Quietly Made Him Wealthier Than Jeff Bezos

Watching someone win quietly gives you a strange sense of satisfaction. No event to launch the product. No big tweet. There wasn’t a time on the internet that people could point to and say, “Remember that?” Almost right away, Larry Ellison shot to the top of the list of the world’s richest people. One report on earnings. One very interesting afternoon on Wall Street. Suddenly, the 81-year-old co-founder of Oracle’s net worth had grown by more than $100 billion in just one day. This was the biggest gain in wealth that Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index had ever seen in a single day.

That made Ellison‘s total wealth about $393 billion, a little more than Elon Musk’s $385 billion. Jeff Bezos used to be the example of someone with unimaginable wealth. He is now worth about $258 billion. At this point, the space between them and Ellison seems almost nonexistent. But you should know why there is a gap because it tells you something real about where money is going in the tech industry right now.

In any way you look at it, Oracle’s quarterly results were impressive. The business made $14.9 billion, which is 12 percent more than the previous year. Its cloud infrastructure business grew by 55%. But the $455 billion in outstanding performance obligations really scared analysts—in a good way. These are contracts for the future that are pretty much set in stone. That number is 359 percent higher than it was the year before. CEO Safra Catz, who likes facts over showiness, said it was “an astonishing quarter.” It’s hard to make a different case.

It’s easy to forget how long Oracle was thought of as an old business. For years, it was just background noise in tech conversations; it was reliable, made money, and a little dull. The business of databases. Business software. The kind of business that big investors held without getting excited about it. While Amazon Web Services changed the way cloud computing works and Microsoft put a lot of money into AI with OpenAI, Oracle was quietly rebuilding its infrastructure. It added data centers and signed deals with OpenAI, Meta, Nvidia, AMD, ByteDance, and even Musk’s own xAI.

There is a small irony in that last point that is worth noticing. Ellison has more money than Musk in part because Musk’s AI company uses Oracle to run its infrastructure. One of the people who helped the richest man in the world run his own technology took away some of his title.

The bigger picture is important here. A lot of attention has been paid to AI applications like chatbots, image generators, and self-driving systems. It’s becoming clearer, though, that the companies that provide the computers that those apps need are making a lot of money. Building a data center costs a lot of money. People are still needing a lot of computing power. Oracle’s growth in cloud infrastructure makes it look like it has earned a real seat at the table that Amazon, Microsoft, and Google used to hold. That’s not a little thing.

Ellison’s position is also structurally unique among the very rich. He has more than 1.1 billion shares, which is about 41% of Oracle’s equity. Because he owns so much Oracle stock, his personal wealth is almost directly linked to the stock. As soon as the company has a quarter like this one, it has a huge impact on his net worth. It serves as a reminder that the billionaire rankings are based less on cash and more on shares in companies that the market thinks will keep growing.

Musk, on the other hand, has had a worse stretch. Tesla shares are down about 14% so far this year because fewer people are buying electric cars and the company’s political history has made some investors nervous. A proposed $1 trillion pay package still needs to be approved by shareholders. His lead at the top of the list, which looked like it would last for a long time at first, turned out to be less stable than it looked.

It’s still not clear how long Ellison will stay in this job. The markets move. Contracts are late. The Larry Ellison Oracle boom, on the other hand, makes it clear that building roads is more important than building cars right now. Some of the biggest gains in wealth are happening in the background, in the infrastructure that supports the AI economy. Larry Ellison, who spent many years working in the background, put himself closer to the center of it than most people thought.
