Folarin Balogun, a 25-year-old player for AS Monaco in Ligue 1, receives a fixed salary of about €61,923 a week. When those figures are presented simply, they reveal a career narrative that is still in the process of being written, but it is already more intriguing than most people realize.

Balogun’s gross fixed annual salary for the 2026–2027 season is estimated to be around €3.22 million based on salary data that is currently available. Bonuses have the potential to increase that amount to almost €4 million annually. That number shows consistent growth without being the most impressive in European football for a striker who left Arsenal in 2023 as part of a €40 million move to Monaco, a move that raised many questions at the time.

The fact that that salary has increased annually is noteworthy. The figures were significantly lower in 2022–2023. His yearly income had grown to about €3 million by 2024–2025. The development isn’t spectacular, but it’s steady, and consistency in football contracts frequently indicates that a club believes in what they see in games and on the training field, not just in highlight reels.

Balogun and Monaco will have about two more full seasons together after his contract expires in June 2028. The deal is modestly structured by top-tier European standards, with about €6.44 million left in fixed contract value and an additional €1.6 million in potential bonuses. That isn’t necessarily a critique. Balogun is consistent with the financial philosophy that Monaco has always adhered to.

One peculiar aspect of Balogun’s financial circumstances is one that is rarely discussed. He is reportedly unable to take advantage of the same tax benefits that many foreign players enjoy in Monaco’s renownedly advantageous tax environment because he is an American citizen and represents the United States abroad. His gross monthly salary is estimated at around €230,000, but the tax treatment he faces differs from, say, a European counterpart at the same club. It’s a peculiar structural disadvantage that results from citizenship and paperwork rather than performance.

An additional layer is added by the USMNT context. At the 2026 World Cup, Balogun was listed among the highest-earning American players at the tournament, alongside Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and others. Ten years ago, the total earnings of the top five American players would have seemed ridiculous, but they came to about $66.5 million. With an estimated $27.5 million in total yearly compensation—the majority of which comes from endorsements—Pulisic leads that group. Even though Balogun’s marketing portfolio isn’t yet on par with Pulisic’s, his on-field earnings put him in a respectable category.

Additionally, there’s talk that Balogun might leave Monaco before his contract expires. Reports suggest transfer interest at around €30 million, which would represent a modest loss on Monaco’s original investment — though football math rarely works out cleanly. Although it’s still unclear if that move will actually happen, the discussion itself indicates that his market value is still reasonable.

In all the numbers, it’s easy to miss the thing’s arc. Growing up in London, Balogun attended Arsenal’s academy, placed a calculated wager on himself by going on loan to Reims, where he scored an incredible 21 league goals, and developed enough of a case to secure a big transfer and an international career for the United States. All of that is reflected in the salary, not just the contract sheet.

It’s difficult not to view this as a platform rather than a ceiling at €3.2 million annually and still on the right side of thirty. The size of the next contract and the location of its signing will reveal a lot about the type of career Folarin Balogun is actually pursuing.
