Not too long ago, the mere sight of the Marvel logo on screen was enough to genuinely excite a crowd of strangers in a theater. Opening nights were the focal point of weekend plans. Fan theories proliferate. The concept of a shared universe felt genuinely novel, almost electrifying. Although that era didn’t end overnight, it’s difficult to argue that it hasn’t given up given the current state of affairs.

Disney probably doesn’t like to repeat the numbers in boardrooms. Thor: Love and Thunder made less money than Ragnarok. By most industry estimates, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania lost money in addition to performing poorly. In sharp contrast to Avengers: Endgame, which made over $2.8 billion worldwide, The Marvels made about $206 million, the lowest total in the franchise’s history. It’s not a dip. There is a pattern there. Additionally, decisions are often compelled by patterns at this scale.

Fatigue with the Marvel Cinematic Universe is no longer a fringe criticism. According to reports from various sources, Disney employees were reportedly already using this phrase in early 2023. When the creators of the content begin to use the same language as the disgruntled viewers, there’s something subtly telling about it.

Although the solution is complex, the fundamental issue is not. Marvel maintained a sort of clockwork discipline for over ten years. Kevin Feige oversaw everything from the center, and the model appeared to be infallible due to the consistency of the results. That discipline appeared to relax during the Disney+ era. All of a sudden, animated series, specials, theatrical releases, and series appeared in quick succession, each purportedly necessary to comprehend the others. On paper, that tactic might have made sense as a means of increasing streaming subscriptions. However, it also taught viewers to feel worn out instead of enthusiastic.

Denis Villeneuve, who has built a career on the opposite approach, once pointed out that there were too many Marvel movies that felt like copies of each other. When Martin Scorsese described the franchise as more akin to a theme park attraction than a movie theater, it caused a great deal of controversy. These weren’t pointless provocations. They were sensing something genuine, that the audience, more intelligent than any algorithm, had finally realized that formula had taken the place of vision.

The Fantastic Four’s second-week box office decline of 66%, which is said to be among the steepest in MCU history, is the kind of figure that doesn’t go unnoticed. It implies that although audiences are still attending opening weekend out of habit or optimism, the goodwill isn’t lasting beyond the initial days. Marvel’s secret weapon, word-of-mouth, appears to have changed.

With the return of CEO Bob Iger, Disney has responded by publicly admitting that volume was an error. Slowing down the release schedule, being more picky, and emphasizing theatrical events over streaming filler are all being discussed. It’s really unclear if that recalibration will be sufficient. According to reports, the studio is reorganizing its Marvel strategy on a structural level, cutting back on the number of projects approved annually, and attempting to restore the sense of occasion that once surrounded each release.

It’s important to keep in mind what Marvel truly created. With over 35 movies and 20 television shows, this interconnected universe has made over $26 billion at the box office, making it the second highest-grossing movie in movie history. Despite the recent setbacks, that achievement remains intact. However, the stumble is genuine, and there is an emotional as well as a financial gap between Endgame and The Marvels. Viewers invest something in these movies rather than merely spending money on them. They stop making that investment when it no longer seems worthwhile.

As I watch Disney navigate this moment, I get the impression that the company is attempting to find a structural solution to a creative problem. It makes sense to make fewer releases, tighten budgets, and plan more carefully. However, it wasn’t a release schedule that caused the audiences to drift away. Something that had once seemed unexpected began to feel predictable, so they left. It will take more than a reorganization chart to get them back.
